About Catherine Fredman
People often ask me, “Don’t you want to write your own book?” My answer is always a resounding “No.” I love helping people bring their stories to life, whether the topic is management strategy or memoir, whether we’re describing an organization’s transformation or chronicling the life of a family. Best of all, I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of working with and learning from some really smart people.
As a ghostwriter, I’ve collaborated on six bestselling management strategy books and memoirs: with Michael Dell, founder of Dell Computers (Direct from Dell and a privately published four-generation family memoir); Andy Grove, CEO and chairman of Intel (Only the Paranoid Survive, Swimming Across); financial news “Money Honey” Maria Bartiromo (Use the News); Spencer Stuart co-chairs Thomas Neff and James Citrin (You’re In Charge. Now What?); and Nokia chairman Risto Siilasmaa (Transforming Nokia).
My most recent partnership was with Estée Lauder chairman emeritus Leonard Lauder on The Company I Keep (published in November 2020).
The skills I bring to every project include: sensitive interviewer, diligent researcher, engaging storyteller, and dedicated partner. As an editor, I can see the big picture and shape your book accordingly; as a writer, I can fill in the frame with powerful anecdotes and sparkling details.
Under my own byline, as the intellectual ecdysiast Gypsy Rose Lee declared, “I’m very versatile.” I’ve tracked down the tastiest lobster in Maine (Travel Holiday), survived survival school by catching fish with my bare hands and lighting a fire without matches (Fitness), analyzed how the 1992 Gulf War affected New York’s belly-dancing business (The Wall Street Journal), and marveled at the discovery of Comet Hale-Bopp (Diversion).
I live in New York City, where I’m a volunteer tour guide with the Central Park Conservancy, a mostly rule-abiding bicyclist, and have swum around the Statue of Liberty and under the Brooklyn Bridge — twice. I graduated cum laude from Bryn Mawr College.
